ABSTRACT

Background: Two years after the outbreak of the pandemic, several studies look at the consequences for the well-being and mental health of young people. In particular, creativity and resilience are cited in the scientific literature as resources that promote this well-being in adolescents and young adults. Purpose: This mini-literature review was created with the aim of examining how many articles have explored the relationship between creativity and resilience in adolescents and young adults since the onset of the pandemic. Methods: Particular attention was paid to how many of the articles actually related to the consequences of the pandemic, in which country they were published, their target population, and the models, instruments and variables used to analyze them. Results: Only 4 articles emerged from the screening, of which only one was actually related to pandemic consequences. All articles were published in Asian countries with a target group of university students. Three of the articles used mediation models to examine the relationship between resilience as an independent variable and creativity as a dependent variable. All articles used self-assessment instruments for creativity and resilience, both at the individual and group level. Significance: This mini-review offers us the opportunity to reflect on the lack of studies that have addressed the issue of youth resources in the form of creativity and resilience since the beginning of the pandemic. The results show us a still underdeveloped interest in creativity in the scientific literature, in contrast to what the media reports on the promotion of creativity in daily life.

ABSTRACT

Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a COVID-19 pandemic on March 11, 2020. Therefore, the availability of vaccines will help develop immunity and protect people from this pandemic. The present systematic study examined knowledge, attitudes, and willingness of adolescents towards COVID-19 vaccine in Bangkok, Thailand. Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and willingness toward COVID-19 vaccine of key stage 4A-5 students at Satit Prasarnmit International Programme in Bangkok towards COVID-19 vaccine. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted using an online questionnaire. A total of 136 students participated. Knowledge, attitudes, and willingness of adolescents toward the COVID-19 vaccine were assessed. Differences between outcomes and socio-demographic characteristics of participants were analyzed through independent t-tests and the ANOVA. The level of willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 was analyzed by a generalized linear model. Results: Students revealed moderate knowledge about COVID-19, correctly answering 11.08 out of 15 points (SD = 1.74), a low level of attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccine 8.49 out of 15 points (SD = 2.51), and low level of willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 vaccine 2.29 out of 5 points (SD = 1.26), in total of 35 points (28 questions). There are statistically significant positive correlations shown between attitude towards COVID-19 vaccine and the level of willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 vaccine (I2 = 0.384, P < 0.01%). Conclusion: This study revealed students in Satit Prasarnmit International Programme had moderate knowledge towards COVID-19, negative attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccine and low willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19. Furthermore, it indicates that there is a casual relationship between attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccine and the willingness of individuals to be vaccinated against COVID-19 vaccine. Thus, attitude toward COVID-19 vaccine acts as a major predictive factor toward the willingness to vaccinate against COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, to increase peopleA's willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19 vaccine, it is necessary to increase peopleA's attitude toward COVID-19 vaccine.

ABSTRACT

Emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience play an important role in the lives of adolescents, and this has been especially so during the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected the mental health of young people. The study objectives were: (i) to analyse the correlations between the EI variables and resilience;(ii) to analyse the differences between the resilience variable and the EI variables according to the sex variable;and (iii) to analyse the predictive relationship between the EI variables and the resilience variable according to sex. A cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive design study was carried out with a convenience sample consisting of 150 students (78 girls;72 boys) between the ages of 12 and 18 years (M=14.83;SD=1.72). The scales administered were: The Emotional Quotient Inventory and the Resilience Scale. The descriptive statistics were calculated -Student's T test was used to check for differences based on the sex variable, and linear regression analysis was performed to check the prediction ratio of the EI subscales on resilience. The results demonstrated positive and significant relationships between the EI variables and resilience, with EI and resilience being higher in boys than in girls -this differs from previous data, perhaps influenced by the Covid-19 pandemic. The results also reflect that EI positively predicts resilience to a greater extent in boys than in girls.

ABSTRACT

Medication prescription procedures were reviewed at psychiatric residential treatment centers (RTC), and a quality improvement project was conducted in order to implement integrated electronic medical records (EMR) and computerized provider order entry (CPOE). To assess the impact of preexisting prescribing practices on RTCs, surveys were sent anonymously to current and past providers of regional and local RTCs. The surveys assessed the impact of the prescribing protocol on workflow, the frequency of medication errors, the impact such errors had on patient care, the overall provider satisfaction, and the discrepancies between electronic and paper charts. Current providers were then re-surveyed after implementing the integrated CPOE system in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first round of provider survey results revealed that the majority of staff (n = 10, 70%) observed frequent medication errors and were largely dissatisfied with the current medication ordering and administration process (n = 10;70%). Incident Response Improvement System (IRIS) reports revealed the most common medication errors were omissions, incorrect dosing, and incorrect medications administered. After the initiation and implementation of the CPOE, staff satisfaction increased with the process (n = 14;50%) noting that medication errors were less frequent than before (n = 14;50%). ABSTRACT

Without the structure and schedule of traditional activities such as in-person school and socialization, evidence is emerging of pediatric sleep changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. A narrative review was conducted of the sleep literature during the pandemic for preschoolers, school-aged children, and adolescents. Changes in sleep and risk and protective factors for sleep heath during the COVID-19 pandemic are reviewed along with real-life clinical case examples for each developmental period. Given the high rates of pediatric sleep disturbance, clinicians, researchers, and policymakers should refine screening strategies and facilitate referrals for behavioral interventions to support sleep health during pandemics and other natural disasters. ABSTRACT

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in young age groups (chil-dren, adolescents, and young adults) has a higher prevalence than individuals at other stages of the lifecycle. The implementation of mental health services faces more barriers to professional care than in the pre-pandemic period. This study aims to identify the effect of sociodemographic and Public Health and Sosial Measures on the mental health of young age groups and mental health services during the COV-ID-19 pandemic. We conducted a mixed-methods-integrated approach to synthesize the findings and drew results using mixed-methods analysis. Literature finding was conducted in seven databases. The selection procedure followed the f low diagram of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses. Inclusion criteria included all types of research that looked at the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and mental health services. There are 44 articles included, and the quality assessment shows that the study was evaluated as 80% and 100% quality criteria met. During the implementation of Public Health and Social Measures, the young age group experienced mental health problems, including stress, depression, anxiety, sleeping disorder, eating disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder related to socioeconomic status, academic, and social factors. ABSTRACT

Problematic Internet use by children and adolescents has increased in recent years, causing negative consequences in the psychoemotional, physical, social, and academic development of minors. However, few studies have examined the change in problematic Internet use by minors following the pandemic. Thus, the main objective of this research was to study whether there has been an increase in problematic Internet use after the lockdown due to COVID-19, analyze if this increase is related to parental supervision and explore its link with age, gender, and non-educative online activities. This was a retrospective study including 156 parents of children (aged 5 to 16 years), who answered a set of questionnaires with good reliability to assess their children's problematic Internet use, the frequency of use of the activities that children perform on the Internet and the supervision that they give to their children. These variables were compared before and after the lockdown due to COVID-19. The results showed that there has been an increase in problematic Internet use by minors after the lockdown. On the other hand, the findings did not show a significant relationship between parental supervision and less problematic Internet use at either time point. It is noteworthy that parental supervision remained unchanged despite the increase in problematic Internet use after the lockdown. © 2023. Psy, Soc & Educ.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 era unleashed a separate medical crisis in the United States: adolescent mental health struggles led to a spike in teen suicides. Adolescence, the period of development long associated with the search for one's identity—a struggle that requires engagement with one's peers for a healthy resolution—was complicated by the lockdowns and extended periods of isolation. The social convulsions associated with this past year exposed an unfortunate vulnerability of this generation: deep down, they long for what their predecessors had—embodied, meaningful connections with their peers. Using the existential theories of French Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, this paper examines how the contextual elements of this pandemic have contributed to an evolutionary process vis-à-vis the current crisis of adolescent identity, and then explores how we might consider deliberate learning opportunities for to help students understand themselves and the impact of what has just happened to the global community.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] To analyze and determine the impact of telematic media on the exercise of the communication regime between children and adolescents and their parents, with emphasis on the transformation generated by the mobility restrictions derived from Covid-19. [Methodology/Approach/Design] For the development of this work, a descriptive and explanatoiy research is used, employing the dogmatic methodology -classical of the legal sciences- and the systematic, analytical and factual sub-methods. [Findings] Based on the present work, it is evident that: li) effective compliance with the communicational regime cannot be understood exclusively from a physical visitation mechanism;(ii) telematics resources have allowed the communicational regime through physical visits to be complemented as well as perfected;(iii) there is a normative diaspora at the international level - with greater force after the pandemic - that tries to regulate virtual interaction in the compliance of communicational regimes, however it is not possible to define a majority position that resolves its treatment, although physical contact is still considered as a necessan source to guarantee the family unity of the child and adolescent. [Practical Implications] This article critically emphasizes two points: (i) the normative dispersion with respect to the regulation of telematics media as formulas for compliance of the communication regime;consequently, (ii) it is necessan to carry out an interdisciplinary analysis to determine to what degree the new technologies allow the generation of the affective bond required by the communication regime, and to which children and adolescents and their parents have a right. [Originality/Value] The present research is novel given the post-pandemic context in which the need to incorporate telematic media in the communication regime must be verified, as well as the opportunity to anticipate future scenarios that may again generate isolation measures. © 2023 Universidade de Brasilia. ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on 16 LGBTQ+ individuals 16 -18 years of age in rural Washington. Data were collected using semi structured virtual interviews, an Experience Questionnaire (EQ) and the Behavioral Assessment Scale for Children - Edition 3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BASC-3). A few major themes emerged from the data: changes in relationships, negative psychological impacts, resiliency, and challenges such as barriers, tensions, and routine changes. Participants found COVID-19 restrictions created barriers to accessing social outlets such as extracurricular activities, LGBTQ+ community center, and so on, as well as engaging with resources for mental and physical health. Participants reported that navigating the significant changes in routines due to school closings and social distancing measures negatively impacted their mental health. Online school, increased home responsibilities, lack of structure or routine, and pressure to maintain grades were the main stressors found to contribute to a decline in mental health. Tensions related to having differing opinions from family members were often triggered or exacerbated by increased proximity with family, due to being stuck at home. Tensions also included experiences of homophobia, transphobia, and racism. These tensions contributed to lower mental health, as many participants felt "trapped" in their own home and unable to reveal parts of their identity. Participants reported that COVID-19 restrictions also impacted their relationships positively in some ways. Some participants found that COVID-19 restrictions allowed them to get out of negative relationships, identify healthy or positive friendships, and be more intentional in their friendships. Although most participants experienced negative psychological impacts on their mental health, many were also able to identify areas of resiliency and improvement. Participants identified new methods for coping, found new and innovative ways to engage with support networks, and found that increased time alone allowed for self-improvement and unprecedented identity exploration. Results of the study add to the limited research currently available about the impact COVID-19 restrictions had on LGBTQ+ youth in rural areas and provide critical information for professionals who work with school-aged LGBTQ+ populations, especially those living in rural communities. ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to broaden the knowledge about the personal and parental factors associated with teenagers' efforts to actively engage in the developmental task of vocational preparation. We investigated the associations between parental career-related behaviors (i.e., parental support, interference, and lack of engagement), adolescents' career exploration, and the moderating role of dispositional optimism. Our sample was formed by 441 Romanian teenagers (58 % males, M = 14.17, SD = 1.05). The results suggested that ado-lescents experiencing a low level of parental support reported a low level of career exploration, regardless of the level of dispositional optimism. Conversely, when the level of parental support was high, participants reported a higher level of career exploration when they also reported a high level of dispositional optimism. We discuss the importance of examining individual characteristics in conjunction with ecological factors related to adolescents' environments when understanding career exploration.

ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19-Pandemic Lockdowns initiated online teaching-learning in India. We aimed to assess mental health (MH) of adolescents studying online for academic milestone of matriculation during these circumstances. Material(s) and Method(s): It was a cross sectional study carried out in Western Maharashtra, during 2021. MH of study subjects was assessed by presence and severity of symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress (DAS) and emotional intelligence (EI). They were measured by DAS Scale-42 (DASS-42) and Schutte's self-report EI test (SET) respectively with collection of socio-demographic information maintaining confidentiality. Data were analysed by SPSS-20 software. MH parameters were compared with pre-pandemic pilot and other studies to study effect of online education and overall COVID-19 Pandemic scenario on MH of study subjects. Result(s): Total 1162 adolescents participated, out of which 59 were omitted from the analysis due to incomplete data. Out of remaining 1103 participants, 43% boys & 57 % girls with the mean age of 14.69 (+0.78) years. Majority of them belonged to middle socio-economic-status. Mean DAS and EI scores denoted mild anxiety with no evidence of depression and stress. Mean EI score was in normal range. Mean DAS scores were significantly lower and mean EI score was significantly higher than reported in -pandemic pilot and other studies. Conclusion(s): MH derangement of matriculating adolescents during COVID-19- Pandemic with online education seemed to be less severe than that was in pre-pandemic times with in-class education. Recommendations: MH support at schools needs to be strengthened. During the post-COVID-19 period, online school education may be continued in LMIC like India on the basis of willingness of students and parents but with caution and understanding of socio-cultural background and support.Copyright © 2022 Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences. ABSTRACT

We report two cases of mixed infection caused by Varicella Zoster and COVID-19 in sibling adolescents. We describe the disease course and provide the results of laboratory examination. High prevalence of these infections necessitates timely verification of the diagnosis and causal therapy. Particular attention should be paid to people with a high risk of pneumonia. Timely vaccination of children against Varicella Zoster and COVID-19 is increasingly important now. The aim of this article is to draw attention to the problem of this coinfection. It allows us to accumulate the data on such cases, identify the risk factors, as well as risk factors for complications.Copyright © 2022, Dynasty Publishing House. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a condition that is often associated with an increased risk of infection for coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19, which can be fatal or even cause death. AIM: The study aimed to analyze the risk factors of obesity incidents in children during COVID-19 pandemic era in Gorontalo City. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The risk factors for obesity include physical activity, history of obesity, fast food consumption, sleep duration at night, and breakfast. It applied analytical observational research with a case-control study design, matching the gender and age. The case was students when measured with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or above 25 kg/m2, while the control was student when measured with a BMI of 18.5-22.9 kg/m2. At the same time, the numbers of samples were 150 children in which the sampling was carried out non-random by applying purposive sampling technique. RESULT(S): Finding denoted that all the variables examined significantly correlated with obesity incidents during COVID-19 pandemic, with odds ratio (OR) value was <1. Specifically, the physical activity variable had the highest OR value compared to other variables, namely, OR 2.939, and this meant that adolescents who do not exercise or exercise <3 times a week during the COVID-19 period were at 2.939 times risk compared to adolescents who exercise 3 times a week. CONCLUSION(S): The finding of this study concluded that in the COVID-19 pandemic era, physical activity or exercise is the most influential risk factor for the incidence of obesity compared to other variables.Copyright © 2022, Scientific Foundation SPIROSKI. Os manuscritos ora apresentados constituem a transcrição — ainda que com algumas adaptações — da palestra proferida pelo Professor José Paulo Netto, em 29 de setembro de 2020. Desde logo, informamos ao leitor que o presente texto passou pelo crivo do palestrante que, depois de atenta leitura, aprovou-o para publicação. A atividade supracitada foi organizada pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Serviço Social, da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina. Como já estávamos enfrentando a crise sanitária decorrente da pandemia da Covid-19, a palestra foi realizada na forma de um Webinário, com a minha mediação. Na ocasião, o Professor José Paulo Netto abordou o tema Marxismo e Serviço Social: elementos para pensar a pesquisa, a produção do conhecimento e os desafios do trabalho dos assistentes sociais. Como destacamos já à época, o professor José Paulo Netto tem um carisma inquestionável e uma competência intelectual amplamente reconhecida. Trata-se de uma exposição sobre o tema feita por um dos mais importantes marxistas da atualidade no Brasil. Suas contribuições ultrapassam as fronteiras do Serviço Social, tanto brasileiro como latino-americano, caribenho e europeu. José Paulo Netto tem contribuído para o debate da teoria social marxista e, por isso, tem também reconhecimento em outras áreas do conhecimento, o que acaba por fortalecer o próprio Serviço Social brasileiro, haja vista que é um agente desta categoria. Quem o conhece sabe que a sua produção intelectual é acompanhada pela militância política, no contexto das lutas anticapitalistas. Não por acaso, José Paulo Netto recebeu a insígnia de ser um marxista sem repouso, não só pela sua contribuição no âmbito da academia, mas também pela sua capacidade de problematizar e colocar luzes sobre as pautas e as lutas da classe trabalhadora. A exposição de José Paulo Netto que agora chega ao público também em forma de uma publicação escrita por esta edição da Revista Katálysis foi realizada num período imediatamente precedente à publicação daquela que já tem sido reconhecida como uma de suas mais importantes produções intelectuais. Trata-se do seu livro Marx: uma biografia, que foi lançado no final de 2020 e que deu forma a um sonho que perseguia o autor desde a sua adolescência. Este sonho, talvez mais do que poderia ele imaginar, tem ganhado força social na medida em que tem suscitado nos estudiosos do marxismo, principiantes ou não, questionamentos importantes sobre o nosso tempo histórico a partir da obra e da vida de Karl Marx, o que evidencia a atualidade do seu pensamento para orientar as lutas pela emancipação humana.Alternate :The following manuscript results from the transcription — albeit with some adaptations — of the lecture given by Professor José Paulo Netto, on September 29, 2020. The text was reviewed by the speaker himself, who, after careful reading, approved it for publication. The aforementioned event was organized by the Postgraduate Program in Social Work, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Since we were already facing the global health crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, the lecture was held in a Webinar format and coordinated by me. During the occasion, Professor José Paulo Netto addressed the theme entitled Marxism and Social Work: reflections on research, knowledge production, and the challenges of social workers' practice. As we pointed out at the time, Professor José Paulo Netto has undeniable charisma and widely acknowledged intellectual competence. The theme was tackled by one of the most important Marxists in Brazil today. His contributions surpass the boundaries of Social Work, both Brazilian and Latin American, Caribbean and European. José Paulo Netto has enriched Marxist social theory in general and, therefore, he also has an impact on other areas of knowledge, which further strengthens the Brazilian Social Work, since he is a representative of this category. Those who know him are aware that his intellectual career is accomp nied by a life of political militancy, in the context of anti-capitalist struggles. Not by chance, José Paulo Netto has received the title of being a restless Marxist, not only for his efforts in the academic field, but also for his capacity to challenge and shed light on the agendas and struggles of the working class. This lecture by José Paulo Netto which now is brought to the general public in the form of a written piece, published in this issue of Katálysis Journal, was held right before the release of what has already been recognized as one of his most important intellectual works. His book Marx: a biography, which was released in late 2020 and fulfilled one the author's teenage dream. This dream come true, perhaps more than he could have imagined, has gained social force to the extent that it has raised in scholars of Marxism, beginners or not, relevant questions about our historical time from the work and life of Karl Marx, which highlights the relevance of his thought to guide the struggles for human emancipation.

ABSTRACT

Improving the system of adolescent myopia prevention and control and promoting adolescent healthy development is one of the main directions of healthy China construction in the new era. The paper reviewed national myopia policies and local practices, and proposed reflections on the high burden and complex etiology of myopia among adolescents, as well as unclear role and lack of coordination mandate during the COVID-19 epidemic. Based on the synergy theory, through the analysis of the functional positioning of multiple subjects in the prevention and control of myopia, the paper highlighted the multi-party linkage of government, schools, medical institutions, communities, families and markets, profiling the resources and advantages of each subject, as well as dynamic management of adolescent myopia, as well as a multi-subject collaborative prevention and control system with national unity, clear rights and responsibilities, and long-term cooperation.

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to investigate the links between internet and social media usage, social media addiction, and eating behaviors of adolescents during coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in Türkiye. A total number of 346 adolescents (243 girls and 103 boys) participated in the study. Daily internet, social media, and social media tools usage (h/day) were questioned. Participants completed the Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents for measurement of social media addiction and the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire for investigation of eating behaviors. Daily internet and social media usage were found to be 6.1 ± 3.2 and 2.9 ± 2.2 hours, respectively, for boys and 6.0 ± 3.1 and 3.2 ± 2.3 hours, respectively, for girls. Social media addiction levels did not differ between genders, whereas the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire and its subscales (emotional, external, and restrained eating) were statistically higher in girls (p < .001). The Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents was positively correlated with daily internet and social media usage duration, Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, emotional eating, and external eating. Considering the potential interactions between social media and eating behavior, it is necessary to develop effective interventions regarding adolescents' social media usage, eating behaviors, and attitudes. © Author(s).

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the way in which children and adolescents went through schooling, particularly in single-mother households, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scarce official information published is reconstructed and compiled, specific cross-check are made through the official microdata base and different documents produced by international organizations, particularly UNICEF, are selected. A quantitative and qualitative (that is, mixed) analysis is combined here, based on the work with the aforementioned sources. It is expected to provide inputs for decision-making while at the same time providing material that contributes to the field of work on school inequality that was generated during the pandemic. The general question guiding this work is to what extent the COVID-19 pandemic will deepen pre-existing marks in the educational system and what is the schooling gap by gender that the pandemic will leave behind.
